Style Guide - Flannel fabric

It is generally known that the flannel fabric is one of the most popular fabrics during autumn and winter. Sure, it may be because the flannel fabric is perfect for the cold temperatures but also its function and unique style that it carries with it in fashion.

When you hear the word flannel shirt, you can not help but get a picture in your head of a classic "lumberjack shirt". But is it really these "lumberjacks" who made the fabric popular with the public, or is there perhaps some other story behind it?

We will try to sort this out by going through a part of the flannel's history.

The history of flannel fabric

The name flannel is said to come from the Welsh word gwalen which would mean wool. According to research, the British company and weaving company Fox Brothers in Somerset attributed the flannel fabric, which was developed sometime during the 17th century. The company's greatest success came during the two world wars during the 20th century, when Fox Brothers was largely only weaving for the military.

The fabric has thus been among people for over 400 years, but it was during the first half of the 20th century that it had its great success. It was mainly popular for its sportiness as flannel was used as a material for cricket pants. Today it is not only a sporty fabric but it has slowly but surely developed into something of a mix between formality and leisure.
